What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and how we are, without judgment.
The goal is not to clear our mind of thoughts; it’s to become more aware of our thoughts and feelings and to be with them with compassion.
As we develop our awareness, we’re better able to engage with the world and not react to or be overwhelmed by it.
Why is mindfulness called a “practice?”
Traditionally, mindfulness practice includes sitting and walking meditation, guided relaxation, and other techniques that can help you experience more presence in daily life. It is called a “practice” because it helps us to practice for real life. Just about anything you do can be a practice. When you are fully aware of what you are doing, you are practicing mindfulness.
What does it take to practice?
Not much! Mostly, a willingness to experiment. Many people find it easier to practice with others than to do it alone. Classes are a great way to get started, and mindfulness communities, such as our Caregiver’s Cafe, provide ongoing support that can help you maintain your practice.
If you wanted to build muscle through weight training, you’d start with light weights and gradually increase them. You would also expect to workout regularly in order to generate results. The same is true with your “mindfulness muscle.” You can start practicing just five minutes a day and gradually increase this period to ten minutes. The research shows that’s all it takes to start experiencing the benefits of mindfulness.
How can mindfulness help YOU?
Mindfulness can help you to experience your thoughts and emotions differently. You can free yourself from cycles of anxiety or overthinking and find more peace and spaciousness in daily life. When you feel more ease, you’re better able to connect with and care for the people you love - hence they can benefit as well.
While there is ample research about the benefits of mindfulness, the only way to learn how it might help you is to try it.
Just ten minutes per day can help you:
Build emotional resilience & reduce reactivity to stressful situations
Enhance feelings of peacefulness and the ability to concentrate
Be more present in your life at work and at home
Build your capacity to communicate and connect with others
Offer yourself kindness and compassion in times of challenge. Find more ease and happiness in everyday life.
