Mindfulness
What is mindfulness?
We’ve heard a lot about mindfulness, but what exactly is it? Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present, aware of where we are, and how we are, without judgment. The goal is not to clear our mind of thoughts; it’s to become aware of our thoughts and feelings and to be with them, with compassion. As we develop our awareness, we’re better able to engage with the world and not react to or be overwhelmed by it.
Why is it a practice?
Mindfulness practice is called “practice” because it helps us to practice for real life. And, like most skills, mindfulness requires practice. Mindfulness practice includes sitting and walking meditation, guided relaxation, and other techniques that help you experience more presence in daily life.
When you want to build muscle through weight training, you start with light weights and gradually increase them. You can do the same with your “mindfulness muscle.” Start with five or six minutes a day when you pause, practice and learn what type of practice feels most nourishing.
What does it take to practice?
Not much! Mostly, a willingness to experiment. Try practicing on your own and also with others. One of the gifts of Covid is the abundance of virtual mindfulness communities, most of which allow participants to drop in/out of practice sessions without any commitment. You’re welcome to try practicing with the Opening Heart Mindfulness Community, of which I’m a part. Usually, these practice sessions include sitting and walking meditation (as opposed to instruction).
How can mindfulness help YOU?
Mindfulness can help you recognize habits that keep you caught in cycles of busyness, anxiety or over-thinking and learn how to transform them, helping you to find more peacefulness, freedom and joy in your life.
While there is ample research about the impact of a regular mindfulness practice, the only way to learn how it might benefit you is to try it. Just ten minutes per day can help you:
Reduce anxiety, sadness and your reactivity to stressful situations
Enhance feelings of peacefulness and the ability to concentrate
Be more present in your life at work and at home
Build your capacity to communicate and connect with others
Offer yourself kindness and compassion in times of challenge
Find more happiness in everyday life
